Aguero: How to beat injury

Solo Soccer Training takes a look at Sergio Aguero and how changes to his diet have helped to protect him from injury.

Sergio Aguero gives us a low down on the changes to his diet and training regime that have bulletproofed his body and made him fitter today than ever before.

Since Aguero joined Manchester City in 2011 he’s become a renowned goalscorer. The name Aguero terrifies defences and electrifies the fans, but there is also another association with Aguero. Injury.

Aguero has been plagued with muscular injuries, pulled hamstrings, calf and groin strains. At one point it seemed like every time Sergio got going, injury would cause him to break down.

“I had to change a lot of things, starting with my food. I needed a healthier way of life,” said Aguero, who has scored 6 goals in his first 3 games of 2016/17.

Nutrition is a commonly overlooked part of fitness, but as somebody training on an individual basis it is one of the easiest and most beneficial changes we can make. After meeting without an Italian specialist, Aguero was advised to cut out pasta, sugar and red meat from his diet. All foods that nutritionists believe release detrimental toxins into the body.

“I went to a doctor in Italy and he checked everything we did, and I had to change quite a bit – no more pasta, no sugar and no meat, which I used to eat quite a bit because Argentinian meat is very good. Hopefully, this season has proved that it has worked and I can stay the same until the end of my career.”

Changing his diet was the first building block in a process that had one aim, have Aguero training more regularly. Yes, even the best have to train more than once or twice a week!

“In training sessions I was struggling a little bit. For example, after every three training sessions I had to stop – so I have improved in that. I also had to have a lot of treatment after training sessions as well – now I hope I can stay like this until the end of my career.”

It’s this desire at the highest level that could see Aguero elevate himself to the same platform as the likes of Lionel Messi, Ronaldo and Luiz Suarez. Not contempt with simply being very good, Sergio has been forever looking to find news ways of keeping himself on the training pitch.

Despite Missing two penalties, Sergio Aguero still scored a hat-trick vs Steaua Bucharest in the Champions League.

“I started the season very well, but then got injured, and after I came back with the more minutes I played, I got better and better. I try to do that every season.

Even after set backs you have to get back on track. It’s OK to feel down and disappointed if you have a bad game or get injured during a game, but don’t allow your mind to stay in that disappointment. You have get yourself back up, dust yourself off and focus on getting better as a soccer player. Just like Sergio Aguero.
